Grounded Notes is a twice-weekly letter for people who are learning to trust their body again. Written by Sinead Kelly — nervous system practitioner and creator of The GROUND Method™.
What's actually happening when a child can't get through the school gate
A parent came to me recently about her daughter. Eight years old. Can't get through the school gate most mornings. Textures feel unbearable. Sounds are too much. Described by teachers as anxious, oppositional, too sensitive.
The parents had tried everything. Reward charts. Conversations. Consequences. Nothing shifted.
When we looked at what was happening in the body, we found four active primitive reflexes, solar plexus imbalance, and a sensory system without a filter.
The school environment, as it's designed, was simply not built for how this nervous system works. Not because something is wrong with her. Because her system is still integrating things that most systems integrate much earlier, and the environment is asking more of her than her current capacity can hold.
This is the R in the GROUND Method. Regulate. Down-regulation before problem-solving. Safety before strategy.
It applies to children as much as adults. Maybe more.
When we stop asking what's wrong with this child and start asking what does this nervous system need, the path opens.
The capacity isn't missing. The filter is. And building the filter is workable.
If you're a parent navigating a child whose system feels this way, you're not alone, and there's more that can be done than you might have been told.
Something to notice.
Think of a child in your life, or yourself at a young age. Was there a time when the environment felt like too much? What did you do with that? What did your system reach for?
X, Sinead
