Grounded Notes is a twice-weekly letter for people who are learning to trust their body again. Written by Sinead Kelly — nervous system practitioner and creator of The GROUND Method™.
The mask was a good program
Over-functioning. Self-reliance. Constant busyness. The instinct to manage everything alone before anyone offers to help.
These aren't flaws. They're masks — and they were good programs, once. They kept things safe when safety wasn't guaranteed. They got you through what needed getting through, at a time when there may not have been another option.
The trouble is, programs like this don't come with an expiry date. They just keep running, long after the original threat has passed, because the body hasn't been given clear evidence that it's safe to stop.
Retiring a protective pattern isn't dramatic. It's not a single decision or a breakthrough moment. It's slow, repeated evidence — small experiences of safety, again and again, until the body believes it doesn't need the armour quite so tightly anymore.
This is D — Deepen in the GROUND Method: the long, real work of letting change actually settle into the nervous system, not just into your understanding of yourself.
A question to sit with
What's one protective pattern you can name in yourself — and what did it once protect you from? You don't need to dismantle it this week. Just naming it clearly is the beginning.
X, Sinead
